Dish vs. Cable

We've had Dishnetwork for the 3 1/2 years that we have lived here. The bill without premium movie channels rose past $60. Sometime last year my wife downsized our package to less channels and no DVR so we saved about $10 or so a month. Well just recently she switched us to Comcast Cable. She switched because we were able to get more channels for $28 a month WITH all taxes. Plus we got a Digital Video Recorder to boot! The only drawback is having to learn where all our favorite channels are located.

Why is it then I always hear "save up to $30 over cable?" If that is the case will they now give me back dish for FREE? Doubt it.

The plus is we now have many more channels including some we gave up when we downsized: Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, Gameshow Network, Bravo, Oxygen, OLN, FoxSports to name a few. We also have ON DEMAND programming. This is great for my 4 1/2 year old when she wants to watch NOGGIN at night when most kids channels show cartoons or shows for those over 7. We can pull up many ready to go shows that are just perfect for her.

The main reason we switched was that we were not allowed to get SBC's "bundle" service since we were already a DishNetwork customer. We could have saved about $30 a month if they would have let us bundle the package. Well, we're saving that $30 a month and DishNetwork lost our $60 a month.

Why not cater to the customers you already have instead of trying to lure new ones in with cheap prices like Comcast did? The positive is that the $28 a month is for a full year. It definitely pays to shop around: phone, internet, TV, etc.

Do you have any saved money stories like this?

I've always wondered why companies don't treat their regular customers nicer.

Reply to txgrl: By then I'll be ready for my Plasma TV and I'll switch back to a cheaper Dishnetwork.

the one good thing about cable overe the dish is that if you get your house wired for cable, then every room has cable. If you have the dish, you have to get a receiver for each tv (unless you want digital cable then it is the same). Dish adverts low rates then charges you per receiver pere month and then for the local channels. For expanded basic, the deal is cable.

Here is my deal tip....in a year, when your cable bill goes up, call the customer service number and ask if they will keep your bill the same. I do this all the time and rarely am I refused.

For example, I get the DMN Sunday only, when the bill came for $11.50 a month I was shocked because I can go to the store and get it cheaper. I called to cancel the paper and they kindly switched me to a MUCH cheaper rate of $3.53 a month. Yes, $3.53 a month. I usually pay 6 months at a time and when I get another bill for $11.50 I call again to get another good rate.

I also call credit card companies and have them wave the yearly fee. When I was renting an apartment the rent was going up, I told them I was going to move if the didn't keep it the same. I negotiated an ER hospital bill from $3500 to $750 if I paid in full.

Name of the game...ask for a deal, if the first persons says no, ask for a manager...tell them what you want. Most companies want to keep you as a customer,(it cost more to get a new customer that to keep you) and you need to tell them what they need to do to keep YOU.

Sorry this is so long...I'm a poor college student and I need to save money where I can.

Reply to jules: I read an article today in the paper how current customers don't get taken care of like new customers. Must be like dating vs. marriage.

Reply to hokie: i'll still need to research what channels I actually have. Wish I could delete the ones I don't watch like I could on DISH.

Reply to billyv: We had one dish and 2 receivers though?

Reply to Jennifer: Thanks, you are right. You just have to be willing to ask for a deal. It's there most of the time. If not, there are other places who will cut you a deal.
